It's World Chocolate Day | 2022

It's World Chocolate Day.

While we celebrate our chocolate and the contribution we are making to the industry, we struggle to say ‘Happy World Chocolate Day”, and here’s why…

The chocolate industry garners more and more revenue each year as chocolate continues to make the perfect gift. However, there is a dark side to this culture of consumption and gift-giving. There is an incredibly complex and challenging relationship between ‘chocolatey goodness’ and social inequality.

On this day last year, we spoke about the Supreme Court in the USA and its lack of action against enslaved children in the Ivory Coast.

It’s 2022, and we are still voicing the same concerns, the same outrage, all the while getting closer to 2025, which will supposedly be a time when the worst forms of child labour will no longer be (according to some promises made by the industry). The extremely labour-intensive job that is cocoa farming, is no place for children. The conditions are harsh, dangerous and exploitative. We know this, right?

Continuously acknowledging the conditions of cocoa farming isn’t going to lead to change. We need to keep gaining new insights into sustainability, ethical practices and better ways of doing chocolate. The chocolate industry should be rooted in change and leads by example. We will continue saying that there needs to be a chocolate revolution.

Our efforts as a small business in the industry have not changed. We are proudly registered on the Ethical Chocolate Register and continue to demand more from the industry. We have also partnered with incredible brands like Big Mamma to contribute to #CookForUkraine, donating all profits of our bespoke bar to these relief efforts. We aren’t stopping here!

Furthermore, we remain committed to bringing out the best and unique flavours of our chocolates. We are always experimenting and trying new things and loving launching new products. We have even decided to release a Gin! We are excited about this one and can’t wait to tell you more.

We have teamed up with our local Gin Distillery and have soaked our nibs in gin for months to bring out new and exciting flavours.

It's almost ready! We’ll let you know the launch details soon!

So, this World Chocolate Day, we continue to raise important questions and call into account the promises of big companies as well as individuals.
